ABOUT MTS

Who is MTS?

MTS Ltd is a company based in Rotorua, New Zealand. The company has core capabilities spanning:

  • Information management software development
  • Information management services
  • Forest management services

Most successful businesses in any business domain anywhere in the world must deal with two very important issues: a rapidly evolving technology environment and an ever increasing amount of information to sensibly manage (archive, retrieve, filter, analyse and report). There is an ever-increasing dependency upon general and specialist software applications and a cascading problem of applications unable to communicate with one another with each requiring specialist skills and each generating its own information to manage. MTS has taken up these challenges with an innovative suite of management software applications. Our fundamental approach has been to incorporate multi capabilities within the one application and allow seamless communication with other applications. These employ state-of-the-art software architecture, which facilitates rapid development to match our on-going business environment.

A major focus for MTS is the production forestry domain. Our information management software system, with its full GIS and mapping capability (ForestVision), enables small through to the largest businesses, to carry out many essential day-to-day operational tasks as well as manage their information resource. Many smaller forestry businesses, although of insufficient scale to warrant a full ForestVision licence, do however require its capabilities. For these businesses, MTS provides information management and mapping services.

In professional forestry consultancy capabilities, MTS specialises in Forest valuations, forestry business evaluation, inventory and management audit services.

Another of our core activities is the management of New Zealand's national Pruned Stand Certification service (PSC). This business activity is carried out on behalf of and under license to the New Zealand Forest Research Institute. This activity deserves special mention here because it is the sole unifying mechanism for the huge forest estate of the private grower and investor. The company has a license agreement with a nationwide network of around 500 auditors that carry out the certification process. (PSC is described in FRI Bulletin 167 and a recent perspective is provided in the November 1999 issue of New Zealand Tree Grower.)
